The ham radio hobby involves a great deal of equipment. Transmitters, amplifiers, filters, tuners, you name it, ham radio has it. Many basic ham operators get around by the use of a transceiver and an antenna. But why stop there? The most successful operators have tons of equipment, some homebrewed, some from the local ham supply. In any shack, you'll be likely to find handhelds, base stations, microphones, CW equipment, computers- it's all part of the hobby. If a new antenna is too expensive, buy some copper wire and coax, and build it yourself! There are even some simple kits you can buy, where you can build your own rig! Whatever your next project may be, you can find the hardware for it here.
